Ecological and social connectivity

چکیده

Human population growth and the consequent increase in use of natural resources place enormous stress on ecosystems. Road building, urbanization and agriculture are among the main human activities that break up natural areas, often with disastrous consequences for wildlife. Concern about threats to biodiversity is reflected in the continuous increase in the number and size of protected areas worldwide [currently 12% of the surface of the Earth; United Nations List of Protected Areas (http://www.unep.org/PDF/Un-listprotected-areas.pdf)]. However, whereas these threats were previously a powerful stimulus for protecting biodiversity in parks and reserves, with human access being mostly excluded, the current trend is a move from strictly protected areas to people-friendly protected areas (e.g. [1,2]). Ecological Networks and Greenways addresses the issues of integrating conservation with sustainable use. I started reading with some skepticism, not being fond of the idea that the conservation of biodiversity is compatible with the exploitation of natural resources. I have to admit my bias, given that I am more influenced by spatial ecology and population dynamics and often think that such fragmented, human-dominated landscapes do not meet the requirements of species for long-term survival. When reading Ecological Networks and Greenways, however, it becomes apparent that protecting endangered species in large, pristine, well connected areas is no longer an option in many regions: ‘Here, the main problem at present is not to conserve rare or endangered species – they are gone anyway – but rather to reverse the process of deterioration by establishing a restoration trend’. Greenways and ecological networks offer conservation solutions in largely human-modified and fragmented regions. Many protected areas exist as habitat remnants within a matrix of agricultural and/or degraded land, and some have degraded areas within their boundaries. Consequently, the integrity of the ecosystems inside these protected areas, and the ecological processes that sustain them, are under threat. Greenways and ecological networks both focus on providing ecological linkages to encourage the movement of species and nutrients.

Assessment and Spatial Planning of Landscape Ecological Connectivity for Biodiversity Management (Case Study: Qazvin Province)

Habitat and ecosystem fragmentation and, consequently, the loss of landscape connectivity are major causes of biodiversity destruction, leading to disruption of material, energy, and information flow at the landscape scale. Given the importance of this issue, the current study aimed to evaluate the ecological connectivity and spatial planning of Qazvin Province, in order to re-establish and pro...

استفاده از تئوری مدارهای الکتریکی جهت شناسایی کریدورهای مهاجرتی بین پناهگاه‌های حیات وحش موته و قمشلو در استان اصفهان

Modeling of ecological connectivity across landscape is important for understanding a wide range of ecological processes. Modeling ecological connectivity between habitats and incorporating these models into conservation planning require quantifying the effect of spatial patterns of landscape on the degree of habitats connectivity. Recently, concepts from electrical circuit theory have been ad...

A new method to quantify, monitore and assess ecological structures and functions is the application of graph theory. In ecology, this theory demonstrates its suitable application in assessment of ecological connectivity. Connectivity is the structural attribute of landscape which facilitates the species movement among their habitats. Using graph theory, this paper aims to assess the connectivi...

Connectivity of urban green patches is an important structural attribute of urban landscape that facilitates the species movement and transfer of their genes among their habitats. So far, several methods including Graph Theory have been applied to assess ecological connectivity. This research was aimed  to study the application of graph theory to measure the connectivity of green patches in the...

CHAPTER THIRTEEN Disease Effects on Landscape and Regional Systems: A Resilience Framework

In this chapter we present and evaluate a conceptual framework intended to improve predictability of the role of disease in landscape processes of socioecological systems. On a local scale, disease tends to increase the interactions among patches on a landscape, particularly through changes in the frequency and severity of disturbances and increases in the vulnerability of ecosystems to fundame...

Closing the collaborative gap: Aligning social and ecological connectivity for better management of interconnected wetlands

Understanding how governance structures align to ecological processes in a landscape is critical for effective management of ecological resources. Ecological resources are not independent from each other, instead they are interconnected, and their well-being is often critically dependent on upholding ecological connectivity, especially in times of change and disturbances. Coordination and colla...
